Some more members of our research group will be presenting work at various events during the upcoming summer conference season. Magdalena Balcerak Jackson will be presenting her paper, “Imagination and the Apriori/Aposteriori Distinction” at the conference on the apriori at the Northern Institute of Philosophy in Aberdeen on June 16-17. Daniele Sgaravatti will be presenting his paper, “Thought Experiments, Concepts, and Conceptions” at the Philosophical Insights conference in London on June 21-23. And I’ll be presenting on “Contrastive Focus and Cheap Arguments for Numbers” at the 5th annual Semantics & Philosophy in Europe conference in Turin on June 25-27.

Two items: First, Magdalena’s paper, “Conceptual Analysis and Epistemic Progress,” has been accepted for publication in Synthese. Congratulations! (An abstract is available here.) Second, there is an interview and profile of Magdalena in the upcoming issue of the German magazine Philosophie; the issue focuses on the question of what is distinctive about contemporary German approaches to philosophy.

We Emmies would like to say thanks to the speakers and participants who contributed their time and talents to last week’s workshop on the epistemology of modality. The speakers’ presentations were thoughtful and challenging, and the discussions — both during the talks, and over drinks and dinner afterwards — were stimulating and productive. Thanks to everyone for helping to make it such a rewarding event for us!

Joachim Horvath, a former PhD researcher in our project, has submitted and successfully defended his doctoral thesis, “In Defense of Conceptual Analysis”. Congratulations on a job very well done! Workshop in Hamburg Next Week

Most of the members of our group will be traveling to Hamburg next Friday (November 11), to participate in the two-day workshop “Knowledge in a World of Symbols”. The workshop is co-organized with the phlox research group and the Nominalizations group at the University of Hamburg. More information can be found here.
